Supporting Healthy Moms and Babies with March of Dimes

At Delta Dental of Tennessee, we believe healthy smiles are part of a healthy start. That’s why we’re proud to continue our partnership with March of Dimes, an organization that has championed the health of moms and babies for more than 80 years. Together, we’re raising awareness about the vital connection between oral health and prenatal care.

Why oral health matters in pregnancy

Pregnancy brings big changes to the body, and that includes the mouth. Hormonal shifts can make gums more sensitive to plaque, leading to conditions like pregnancy gingivitis, while morning sickness and food cravings can increase the risk of cavities.

These changes don’t just affect moms. Research shows that severe gum disease has been linked to a higher risk of preterm birth and low birth weight, outcomes that can have long-term effects on a baby’s health.

The good news? Most of these risks can be managed with consistent oral care and regular dental checkups during pregnancy.

Working together for healthier outcomes

Through our collaboration with March of Dimes, we’re focused on sharing resources showcasing the connection between oral health and prenatal care. One way we’re doing this is through an educational flyer designed for both expectant mothers and healthcare providers.

Download the flyer here: Pregnancy and Oral Health Flyer

The flyer highlights:

  • Signs and symptoms of dental problems to watch for during pregnancy

  • Tips for keeping teeth and gums healthy

  • Why dental checkups are safe (and important) during pregnancy

  • Where to find more resources through March of Dimes

We encourage providers to print and share this flyer with patients, display it in offices, or distribute it at community events.

A shared commitment to Tennessee families

This partnership is about more than just awareness. It’s about making sure Tennessee moms and babies have every opportunity for a healthy beginning.

Oral health is an important part of prenatal health,  and with the right care and resources, expectant mothers can protect their own well-being and give their babies a stronger start in life.

Together with March of Dimes, we’re committed to ensuring every family in Tennessee has access to the knowledge and tools they need to thrive.
